Smith’s second and third street pianos are both getting a bit old in the tooth and we have deemed it time to replace one of them. The replacement, a donation from a music lover, has been waiting, screwed shut, in the wings since April 2023.

On Sunday 24^th March, we’ll be unscrewing the cover and unveiling our fourth beloved street piano to begin living out the last stage of its life on the mean streets of Canberra. To mark the occasion, we’ve asked talented young pianist, Micah Knight, to spend an hour tickling the ivories, following which there’s an open invitation for other players to book a half hour set (please email smithsalternative@gmail.com if you’d like to play).

Local pianist playing an array of contemporary jazz repertoire, including original compositions, improvisations and interpretations of standard pieces. Deeply interested in deeply spiritual music such as R&B, soul and the avant-garde among other genres. Been a member of several ensembles such as big bands, small combos and played as an accompanist for multiple vocalists including local artist DIMI.
