The turn of the 17th-century saw an amazing wave of creative energy in the performing arts in Europe. Shakespeare was using the English language like never before to tell stories and, in Italy, opera was born, enabling the solo singer to take flight.
John Dowland, lutenist, singer and composer, also rode this wave, writing sensual and sorrowful songs for voice and lute to be played in intimate settings, like the bed chambers of royalty in James I’s palace.
Renowned countertenor Tobias Cole (Opera Australia) and celebrated classical guitarist Minh Le Hoang (Guitar Trek) have created a beautiful program which explores this repertoire, as well as later works by Henry Purcell and others, to show off the beautiful confluence of voice and guitar.
