Saxophonist Jonathan Cooper launches his debut album 'Cruel Sea'.

Meditative, cerebral, fiery and spiritual, ‘Cruel Sea’ strives to encapsulate the raw power of the natural world through blistering solo improvisations and seamless group cohesion.

The latest work from the Melbourne based saxophonist explores modal jazz, French Impressionism, fusion and the avant-garde to create modern Australian jazz at its most exciting.  ‘Cruel Sea’ seamlessly melds sophisticated composed elements with powerful group improvisations to construct a soundscape that obscures the boundaries between the known and unknown.

An active member of the new generation of Australian jazz musicians, Jonathan has performed with international jazz luminaries such as Carla Bley, Tomasz Stanko, Eddie Palmieri, and also with homegrown Australian stars Paul Grabowsky, James Morrison, Barney McCall and Mike Nock.

Featuring:

Jonathan Cooper - tenor saxophone
Harry Tinney - guitar
Angus Radley - bass
Patrick Earl-Danao - drums
Matt Steele - piano
