Early Grave, Fashionably Late

An artfully embellished one-man show, with sleuthing, vermouthing, and a mimed penny- farthing chase, in homage to the worlds of Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne and Oscar Wilde. Comedy for those who keep their brow high and their bow tied.

Fearless explorer. Audacious dandy. Reluctant detective. An improbable account of the malodorous goings on of the night of 28 November 1889, and the events which followed – thrillingly re-enacted! Victorian Dublin's consummate gentleman-adventurer (and rakish raconteur) damn near loses a cufflink in an astonishing tale of derring-do – and don'ts. Murder! Villainy! Corruption! Hyperbole! Physical storytelling prowess, blending Lecoq-trained virtuosity with a Wildean flair.

Early Grave, Fashionably Late debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, then dazzled at the Wexford Spiegeltent Festival. It comes to Canberra following a week-long run at the Butterfly Club in Melbourne as part of their curated summer season.

Bare Witness Theatre Company is led by Christopher Samuel Carroll, a graduate of the prestigious École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq, Paris. They produce solo and ensemble work in Dublin, Paris, and beyond, across a diverse range of styles and subjects, with a commitment to theatre that is physically rigorous and bristles with life. From an empty stage, worlds emerge, set alight by the spark of imagination, and helped along by some tongue-in-cheek mime.

Early Grave, Fashionably Late invites an audience of discerning tastes to wind their pocket watches and journey back to an era of adventure and style, where blood is little more than a damnably difficult stain to get out. A few useful pointers on evading creditors, moustache-waxing, and umbrella-to-umbrella combat are thrown in for good measure.

“A wild adventure that will have you giggling the whole way through… A really well performed and funny piece of character storytelling that I would recommend to anyone interested in an in-depth yarn” (Broadway Baby)
