Brazil celebrates National Choro Day every year on 23 April, marking the birthday of the legendary Choro musician Pixinguinha. Born in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Choro is the vibrant Brazilian instrumental style that gave rise to Samba — which later evolved into the globally beloved Bossa Nova.

This 23 April in Canberra, join us at Smith's Alternative to celebrate National Choro Day with a special musical journey that traces the evolution of the genre — working backwards from the present day to its roots.

The night begins with the high-energy 9-piece Capital Samba, delivering infectious Bossa Nova and Samba grooves, including original compositions. Next, feel the percussive drive and irresistible movement of Movimento Alto. Closing the evening (and marking the final performance in their original line-up) will be Choro da Capital.

This event is also a heartfelt farewell to Jay Lee and his time in Canberra. This will be his swan song before he heads west to the warmer climes of Broome.
