Casual Fan is the musical project of five friends from Sydney, formed around the songwriting of bandleaders, Nate and Esther. With a love of the American folk tradition, the music of Casual Fan expands beyonds the borders of this genre, exploring diverse arrangements and themes of connection and loss, decorating simple frames with dissonance and complexity.

Forming in mid-2019, just prior to a world of lockdowns and self-isolation, Casual Fan’s first EP, “I’ve Dreamt About These Days” was released in late 2020, with radio play on Triple J and Sydney’s FBi Radio, as well as over 1.5 million streams on Spotify. In between live music shut-downs, the band honed an energetic-yet-intimate live show, an experience in a constant state of reinvention, with the band being invited to appear on festival stages such as 2022’s Lost Paradise Festival. The next offering, 2023 EP ‘Bono’s America’, developed upon the band's indie folk sound with a wider, more dissonant musical landscape, informed by 90’s guitar bands like Yo La Tengo and Teenage Fanclub.

After a summer spent abroad in a remote Canadian town, Casual Fan look to emerge in 2024 as an essential Australian guitar band, with songs up their sleeve that tell of heartbreak and finding one's place in the world, even when a million miles from home. This record - Casual Fan's debut full-length, entitled 'Canola', will be released early 2025.

Also appearing, Canberra’s beloved folk rockers The Burley Griffin.
