TOBIAS COLE OPERA SALON - BENJAMIN BRITTEN
Now, fifty years since Benjamin Britten died, is a great opportunity to explore the life and work of England’s finest classical composer of the 20th century and arguably the best since Henry Purcell.
When Britten was emerging as a young composer the world was facing many challenges: the aftermaths of World War 1 and the Great Depression as well as a threatening rise in fascism. As well, the music world, in particular, was affected by recent advances in technology, in radio and the talkies. With optimistic fervour Britten wasn’t going to see these as obstacles. Instead, he adapted and cunningly crafted an inspiring career in music, creating a legacy that resonates today.
Emcee and singer Tobias Cole, joined by pianist Ella Luhtasaari and other Canberra singers and musicians, will share this special story of Benjamin Britten, interspersed with songs, operatic arias, choral works and his Lachrymae for viola and piano. After each Salon there will be an opportunity to ask questions and share observations.
Tickets can also be purchased for the 11am session.
