The name Theodorakis is synonymous with Greek music. An internationally known composer of film scores (Zorba the Greek), his music became a vehicle for social change during the turbulent 1960s and 70s in Greece. His large output includes over 1000 songs, many of which have become part of the Greek musical landscape.

The Eirini Ensemble presents an evening of songs by Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hatzidakis as well as some much-loved traditional instrumental music. The ensemble is headed by Greek soloist Theodora Volti who seeks to communicate the Greek experience through her love of music, language and culture.

A truly collaborative venture, the group features Jackie Luke on the rare Sandouri (hammered-dulcimer) and a string orchestra of some of Canberra’s finest musicians including Amanda Pickering, Sandy Gibbney and Iska Sampson (violin and viola), cellist Rita Woolhouse, Greg Wilson (harp), Jon Jones (Percussion), and Andrew Back (keyboards). You are invited to sample this timeless repertoire from the “golden age” of Greek music.
