Another Wednesday night, another night of exploring the unexpected further reaches of Canberra's performing arts community. But it's the 200th Varietal, so it's gonna be huuuuuuuge!!!!On the 4th Nov, 2015, the very first Smith’s Varietal took place. Chenoeh Miller was the instigator and MC of the first Varietals, and while she didn’t do it for long, the Varietals have hung around nonetheless, like a weird but lovably eccentric uncle. Eight years, one pandemic and 198 Varietals later, we face the very difficult but highly enjoyable task of doing justice to the 200th iteration of this funny old beast – Smith’s Varietal.
To help me, we’ll have two extra MC’s!! Chenoeh herself is going to curate the first hour, and Sheri Ward (host of Capital Punishment and many a Varietal) will deliver the second. Then I, the impossibly handsome Nigel McRae, will provide two more hours of unrestricted entertainment from the further reaches of Canberra’s performing arts community.

Smith’s Varietal is open to all comers. There are no restrictions on genre, style, vulgarity, art form. We will accept virtually anything and anyone. Dance, origami, balancing acts, acrobats, sexual fantasists, impressionists, expressionists, depressionists, nappy boy wrestling, muscle man flexing, magicians, comedians, bonsai demonstrations, cheer girl/boys, burlesque.... Anything interesting, unusual, entertaining, humorous etc. etc. but not illegal and not degrading to the human spirit.
