Wednesday 15th Nov, 2017, marks the one hundredth occasion that Smith’s Alternative has hosted the Varietal. Each Wednesday night, at the rather ridiculous hour of 9.30pm, we, as the blurb always says, explore the unexpected further reaches of Canberra’s performing arts community.
Sometimes it’s been great. Other times it’s been greater. Occasionally it’s been a bit confusing. And now and then it’s been confronting, comforting, silly, disturbing…. Whatever. That’s the nature of the Varietal. We see it as a big-ass funnel through which anything you can possibly imagine humans might do can safely be poured into the beautiful vessels that are the minds of Smith’s most excellent patrons.
On the occasion of this, the hundredth Varietal, Chenoeh Miller, the founder of the Varietal, she of the Little Dove, the Fringe(s), Sound and Fury etc. etc. Canberra’s main maverick matron of independent arts production, will be mixing up a special cocktail of the most delectable and piquant selections.

And we’ll end the night dancing with Dead DJ Joke as he mixes tunes with YES as the main lyric… You know why!
