To celebrate it's 3rd year in Canberra, SIMA, in partnership with ANU and Arts ACT, brings you an extra special Young Women's Jazz Workshop Showcase concert.
This 8 week course was originally founded and developed in Sydney by Dr Sandy Evans OAM with the Sydney Improvised Music Association (SIMA) in 2002. Some of the graduates have gone on to perform headline shows at the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival, win the coveted $20,000 Freedman Jazz Fellowship, and in 2017 the course itself was recognised at the Art Music Awards, winning the NSW State Award for Excellence in Music Education.
The course has been running in Canberra in partnership with the ANU since 2016, directed by Jess Green, and this year, the course has been awarded funding from Arts ACT to extend it's program, with new exciting opportunities for young Canberra women to participate in Jazz.
The concert gives a warm and supportive environment for the course participants to perform the music they have been studying, and try out their new found skills in front of an audience. Many of these students have never tried Jazz improvisation before. Following their set, Zela Margossian will take the stage with her quintet.
Zela Margossian was a participant of the Sydney Young Women's Jazz Workshops in 2012 & 2014, and went on to study at the Sydney Conservatorium and lead her own ensemble, headlining at the SIMA Winter Jazz FestivalSydney Improvised Music Association’s Winter Jazz Festival and performing at the  the Beirut International Jazz Festival in Beirut, Lebanon 2018

Born in Beirut of Armenian heritage, Zela’s music bears influences from the rich and colourful cultures that she represents. During her years studying piano performance in Armenia, Zela developed a great passion for the unique Armenian ethno-jazz that she experiences in the lively local scene. After moving to Sydney, she embarked on a new journey of nurturing this passion and has been making her mark here as a blossoming composer and artist.
