Join the Read Like a Feminist Book Club! Brought to you by the folks at Feminartsy, this monthly book club will bring like minded readers together at Smiths’ Alternative each month to discuss a different book with the help of a panel discussion. 

Grab the book, grab a coffee and meet fellow book nerds all while feeling the warm glow of supporting women writers and their awesome words.

BOOK: The Hate Race, by Maxine Beneba Clarke

Maxine Beneba Clarke is one of Australia’s most original voices. Her short story collection, Foreign Soil won the 2015 Indie Book Award for Debut Fiction. The Hate Race is a “powerful, funny and at times devastating memoir about growing up black in white middle-class Australia”. 

We recommend supporting Canberra’s independent booksellers, and grabbing a copy of The Hate Race from Muse Canberra or Paperchain Bookstore Manuka.

Each month, Read Like a Feminist will feature your regular hosts, Zoya Patel and Yen Eriksen, as well as a special guest speaker. 

ZOYA PATEL is the editor and founder of Feminartsy. She writes fiction and non-fiction, reads voraciously, and loves nothing more than waxing lyrical about her favourite books. 

YEN ERIKSEN is an advocate, writer and radio producer. They are experienced in LGBTIQ advocacy and community development and are a loud and proud champion for intersectional feminism. 

Our October guest speaker will be the wonderful:

FARZ EDRAKI
Farz is a radio producer, occasional writer and co-founder of rip publishing. Her love of all things audio started in student radio, where she once hosted a show in a full-length banana costume, spent an entire day at Summernats, and discovered the true meaning of dead air. She has, at one point or another, called a nunnery, a student housing co-op, and multiple share-houses 'home'.

Entry is by gold coin donation (funds will support purchasing a copy of the next month’s book to keep at Smiths, so those who don’t have the spare pennies for their own copy can still read and join in. Any leftover funds will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation).
