The group, including ex Canberra girl Jess Green, is not only providing the beautiful live performance of this album, but playing ‘musical chairs’ throughout the evening, providing not one band, not two, but three!
Opening the evening, drummer and vocalist Bonnie Stewart performs the sweet ethereal qualities of Bonniesongs. Using live looping and mandolin, Stewart beguiles you into dreamlike trance in the style of new-folk artists such as Joanna Newsome.
For the middle set, Canberra born Jess Green takes the reins with the debut of Pheno, a new musical project and stage name for the ANU trained guitarist/singer. Green was last seen performing in Canberra with her Jazz group ‘The Bright Sparks’ and with Blues legend Jim Conway. As Pheno she brings 21st century science to the wild rhythms of Afro beat, Indie rock and Jazz. Her music layers shimmering electric guitar, electro synths and beats with a stomping backbeat and powerful vocals.
For the final set, the girls re-assemble again and Dennison takes the helm.
Dennison recently launched her self titled album (Pop Frenzy records) to packed rooms at the Newtown Social Club (Sydney), Northcote Social Club (Melbourne) as well as a WA tour including The Byrd (Perth) and Mojo’s (Freemantle)
‘Given the album’s wide scope, re-presenting it live seemed a near-insurmountable task. Indeed, when Dennison and her two companions took their places – Bonnie Stewart behind the drums, Jess Green with a guitar strapped on and Dennison helming a keyboard station – a low-key run through looked likely. But boy did they impress. From the opening rattle of clamshells through to the ambient decrescendo of final track ‘Desiring Machine’, the on-stage activities induced a state of stargazing admiration’
