Hinterlandt is a Sydney-based quintet playing original music written by German-Australian composer/songwriter, Jochen Gutsch. With its unusual combination of indie-pop, classical chamber music and jazz harmonies, the band’s music is as progressive as it is emotional. Embedded in intricate string arrangements, classically trained vocalist Nicole Smede carries the narrative forward as the group moves through imaginative worlds of sound and lyrics.

Hinterlandt have released five albums to excellent reviews and toured extensively, playing at City Recital Hall, Venue 505, Lazybones and many other venues in Sydney, Mona Foma Festival in Hobart, Heide Museum of Modern Art and Old Bar in Melbourne, Ballarat Art Gallery, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, Donau 115 and Panda Theatre in Berlin, and many other places.

The latest Hinterlandt album received 4/5 Stars in the Sydney Morning Herald, which spoke of “surprising poignancy and delightful black humour“.
